Local patients with problems from metal-on-metal hip replacements seek compensation

Williamsons Solicitors act for an increasing number of patients who now have problems following a metal-on-metal hip replacement; typical early symptoms of pain can deteriorate leading to significant later damage, if not addressed early. This is primarily due to a problem with the artificial metal hip used, some of which have now been withdrawn.

Hip Replacements

The components of the artificial metal hip used are mostly made of chromium and cobalt. As the components wear, tiny particles of metal become detached and embedded in soft tissues around the joint, causing an inflammatory reaction. Eventually this process, called metallosis or ALVAL, causes extensive damage to the muscles and soft tissues around the joint. The joint has to be replaced, but in many cases, the damage to the soft tissues results in the early failure of the new hip, because the soft tissues are essential to hold the joint together and prevent dislocation. Unfortunately, many people will be left with long-term symptoms and disability.
