Over the past few months events, performances, engineering sciences and international programme of the arts have been celebrating the life and achievements of Amy Johnson, Hull’s flying heroine. 2016 marked 75 years since her death. Amy was one of the most influential and inspirational women of the twentieth century, setting a string of accomplishments; most noted for flying solo from England to Australia.
The festival engaged people of all ages, even children on their school summer holidays! With activities ranging from the arts, to the more mechanical projects, all interests were well catered for. The aim was to enlighten the public about Amy and for people to learn something new, there may be another Amy out there somewhere…
There are still things happening towards the run up to 2017, the City of Culture year for Hull. A life in Pictures: The Collected Photographs will still be displayed until the 27th September 2016 at the Brynmor Jones Library at the University of Hull from 10.00am – 5.00pm daily, including Sunday with free admission.
Books featuring all the photographs from the collection, many publicly previously unseen, are available from Hull Libraries, Waterstones Hull, Hull History Centre, Sewerby Hall and Gardens and by emailing rick@amyjohnsonfestival.co.uk.
Hull Central Library is still hosting the wonderful “Virtual Amy” in the Children’s Library; you can listen to her stories and take part in the collaboration between Ensemble 52, the University of Hull, the Amy Johnson Festival and the technological wizardry of Glasgow School of Art.
There is also an unveiling of the Amy Johnson statue; the details are yet to be announced at the later end of this month – keep updated on the website here. In the meantime (up until the end of March 2017) there is the “Moth for Amy” trail, make sure to find and tick off all of the moths around town. There is an app available which can be downloaded to your phone, details can be found here.
