Representation of children involved in care proceedings is confined to solicitors who have gained entry to the panel, which requires scrutiny of public law care proceeding court and management skills, as well as demonstration of ability, relevant background and life experience. Mrs Buchanan said that spending the early part of her career in nursing and social services had inspired her to study law in order to help and empower people. “Being a member of the panel enables me to extend this help to the most vulnerable,” she said. “It is very rewarding to offer support and reassurance to young people, help them come to terms with difficult situations and give them a voice.” Williamsons Solicitors, which has one of the largest family departments in Hull and four of its solicitors now on the Law Society Children Panel, was recently recommended in the respected guide to UK law firms, Legal 500, for its ‘expertise in high value cases’. Head of department, Sarah Clubley, said that only solicitors who met the Law Society`s exacting accreditation requirements were permitted to join the panel. “We are very pleased that Fiona’s hard work and experience have been rewarded by this accreditation” she said. “Her achievement coupled with our inclusion in the Legal 500 is excellent news and very encouraging for the department and for the firm.” Mrs Buchanan qualified in 2003, after studying law at the University of Hull and completing training as a solicitor with City of York Council. She joined Williamsons Solicitors in 2007. |
