Asbestos

15 March 2019

Inhalation of asbestos can cause a number of serious illnesses which affect the lungs or the pleura. These different types of asbestos related illnesses including pleural plaques, pleural thickening, pleural effusion, asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. It can take many years for an asbestos related illness to develop after the exposure. Most diseases have a long latency which means they usually take decades before the symptoms occur. However some forms of illnesses such as mesothelioma, are rapidly fatal following the onset of symptoms.

Latest information published by the HSE in October 2018 shows that there were 2,595 mesothelioma deaths in Great Britain I 2016 with projections to be around 2,500 deaths per for the rest of this current decade before annual numbers begin to decline.

Those effected can include carpenters, plumbers, electricians, decorators, ship builders, construction workers, joiners, cement plant workers, mechanics, laggers, fire fighters to name a few. There are also those who have come into contact with it domestically (through washing clothes) or their environment (living near factories or working in buildings with asbestos such as schools).
