Lasting Powers of Attorney during Lockdown

For those who are vulnerable to coronavirus, staying at home is the safest option. However self-isolating or shielding may make it difficult for you to manage your affairs, with even simple outings, such as going to the bank, feeling stressful and risky.

This is where Lasting Power of Attorney (LPAs) can come in handy. An LPA lets you legally appoint someone, called an attorney, to deal with your affairs for you. There are two types of documents: one that deals with your financial affairs and one that deals with your health and welfare.

The financial document is particularly useful given the current circumstances as it can be used whilst you still have capacity and allows your attorney to assist you with managing your bank or building society accounts, paying your bills and collecting your benefits or pension. This means you do not need to leave the safety of your own home and gives you peace of mind that your affairs are being looked after by someone you trust.

It is never too early to make an LPA and if you do lose capacity, through illness or a stay in hospital or you find yourself confined to the house, it is an invaluable document to have.

If you would like to discuss making Lasting Powers of Attorney contact us today on 01482 323697. Williamsons Solicitors are here to help and our offices are now open, offering socially distanced appointments or online video meetings to help put your mind at ease at this difficult time.
