Thousands of people in the UK are affected by the death of a baby or experience pregnancy loss yet it is still seen as a taboo subject.

There was a general debate on #BLAW2019 in Parliament on Tuesday the 8 October 2019 to raise awareness of Baby Loss Awareness Week.

The Policy Ask 2019 is aimed to help parents who lose a baby get the specialist and crucial mental health support they need, at the right time and place, free of charge, for everyone who needs it, wherever they live in the UK. Baby Loss Awareness Week is a collaboration between charities which aims to raise awareness of pregnancy and baby deaths in the UK. Between the 9 and 15 October 2019, parents, families and friends unite to commemorate the lives of babies who have died during pregnancy, at or soon after birth and in infancy.

The care received by bereaved families following the death of a baby can have a long-lasting impact. Whilst it will not remove the pain or grief, it can help them through a heart-breaking time. In contrast, poor care can add to the distress; yet there are still many parents across the UK that do not receive the bereavement support they need.

This week hopes that awareness is raised for change in policy, research, bereavement care and support to those affected by the death of a baby. There are several ways to raise awareness. Watch as landmarks and buildings in your community turn blue and pink, watch and share the short animation on social media, or purchase the pin badge, wear and share you wearing it on social media using #babyloss or #BLAW2019.
