What are the different types of asbestos related illnesses?

20 November 2019

There are different types of asbestos related illnesses including pleural plaques, pleural thickening, pleural effusion, asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Sarah WebsterIt can take many years for an asbestos related illness to develop illnesses after the exposure.

Those effected can include carpenters, plumbers, electricians, decorators, ship builders, construction workers, joiners, cement plant workers, mechanics, laggers, fire fighters to name a few.

There are also those who have come into contact with it domestically (through washing clothes) or their environment (living near factories or working in buildings with asbestos such as schools).

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that takes many years to develop following exposure to asbestos fibres but is usually rapidly fatal following disease onset.

Industrial Disease - Mesothelioma CompensationInformation published by the HSE in 2016 shows that there were 2,515 mesothelioma deaths in Great Britain with projections to be around 2,500 deaths per for the rest of this current decade before annual numbers begin to decline. Of those 2,515 deaths, 2,101 were males and 414 were females.

Once diagnosed then it is always almost always fatal and often within 12 months of onset of symptoms.
