Over 10,000 people die from sepsis unnecessarily every year in the UK.

The number of people dying from sepsis in the UK is extremely troubling, especially as the condition can be treated with a course of antibiotics, if diagnosed quickly.

A recent story in the Daily Mail read that a 37 year old man died after doctors failed on three occasions to diagnosis his sepsis. Mr J had been suffering with a severe sore throat for several days, when he visited his local A&E Department. An out of hours doctor simply told him to purchase over the counter medication, and was sent home.

Only hours later, his condition deteriorated to such an extent that his partner called for an ambulance. On arrival, the paramedics assessed him and diagnosed a virus, stating he did not require hospital treatment.

Later that same day, his condition worsened, and a further ambulance was called, but unfortunately Mr J suffered a cardiac arrest, and died.

The doctors later assessed that Mr J was suffering from epiglottitis, inflammation and swelling of the epiglottis behind the root of the tongue. Despite this being a serious condition, it can be treated with antibiotics, if caught early.

There were missed opportunities by medical professionals to diagnose the developing symptoms of sepsis.

Early recognition of sepsis is vital. If it is identified and treated quickly, in most cases, this will lead to a full recovery with no lasting problems.

Sepsis is a devastating condition which affects 150,000 people every year in the UK, resulting in 44,000 deaths. It is estimated that over 10,000 people die from sepsis unnecessarily every year in the UK due to delayed recognition and management.
