Amy Johnson Festival

4 July 2016

News, Our Community

The 1st of July 2016 marked the beginning of the Amy Johnson festival which will be running until 6th September 2016. It is to commemorate 75 years since Amy’s tragic death.

Amy Johnson is known as one of the most influential and inspirational women of the 20th century. She was the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia, along with a number of other life time achievements. The festival will hold events to show case Amy’s life and legacy. There will be an ambitious, international programme of the arts and engineering sciences appealing to all interests and ages.

As you may have seen around the city of Hull; many colourfully designed moths have been placed on buildings, this is part of the mass engagement public arts project for which we have our very own moth. This creature was chosen because Amy flew a De Havilland Gipsy Moth on her journey to Australia. The moths are to remain where they are until 31st March 2017 to see in our City of Culture year.
