Asbestos in Schools

On Friday evening, BBC News York highlighted the continuing presence of asbestos in schools. It was reported that 75% of schools still contain asbestos according to the Department of Health and that 1,500 schools in Yorkshire contain asbestos. The Department of Education have stated that they will be investing £23bn in school buildings by 2021 to help ensure asbestos is managed safely and to reduce the amount contained in schools.

A recent Government Review stated that between 2003 and 2012 there were 244 mesothelioma deaths were the deceased’s last occupation was recorded as teaching professionals. This included teaching assistants, nursery nurses and school secretaries but did not include caretakers, cleaners, other maintenance staff or pupils.

Asbestos, if left undisturbed and managed safely, does not pose a significant risk. However if disturbed, the fibres can cause serious disease including asbestos related cancer mesothelioma. This illness cannot only have a devastating effect on the individual but also their family.
