BBC2 Hospital

Treatment of Aneurysm

On 10th January 2019 showed the first episode of BBC2 documentary “Hospital” provided an insight in to the Royal Liverpool Hospital in particular their Vascular Department. Within the programme, it highlighted the importance of the quick treatment of aneurysms before rupture takes place which can be life threatening.

An aneurysm is an outward bulging, likened to a bubble or balloon, caused by a localised, abnormal, weak spot on a blood vessel wall. Whilst they can be found in any part of the body, they are most common in the brain, aorta, legs and spleen. If it ruptures then it causes internal bleeding, and if medical intervention is not taken then it can ultimately lead to death. Symptoms of rupture aneurysm includes bleeding, pain, increased heart rate and feeling dizziness/lightheaded.

We at Williamsons are acting for a Client whereby an aortic aneurysm was not picked up by a medical professional after viewing a CT scan. It was therefore left untreated resulting in a rupture which ultimately led to the death of the patient. Had the scan been properly reviewed, then the aneurysm could be monitored and, prior to rupture, operated which would have allowed the patient to live.
