Bill Waddington, a director at Williamsons and a member of the Criminal Law Solicitors’ Association, is part of the fight to ensure legal is available to the public as it is a “basic human right”.
Previous governments have been increasingly cutting back the legal aid budget which has been restricting the public’s access to justice.
The shadow justice minister, Lord Bach, says: “Access to legal help and representation is a cornerstone of the rule of law and the mark of a decent society, but the last government’s reforms have left too many people in the cold.”
A review and meeting is being held to discuss ways to restore legal aid. Bill Waddington and the other members of the commission will start with the point that legal aid is an essential public service, such as healthcare or education. Click here to view the full article from the Guardian.
