You may be aware of the recent film documentary of Sarah Beeny that was aired, following her journey after sadly being diagnosed with breast cancer. Sarah was diagnosed in August 2022 and underwent a double mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation until she was given the all clear in April 2023. According to the NHS website, about one in seven women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime and there is a good chance of recovery if it is detected at an early stage.
A GP may refer you to a specialist breast clinic after examining your breasts for further tests. This may include a mammography or taking a small biopsy to be examined.
If you have any concerns, seek advice from your GP or visit the NHS website here for further information: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/breast-cancer/.
At Williamsons Solicitors, we currently assist a number of clients who have sadly suffered a delayed diagnosis of breast cancer. We have just settled a case for one of our clients for a considerable amount due to a delay in her breast cancer diagnosis. The client attended numerous appointments at the breast clinic for lumps in her breast and was told no abnormalities were found and continued to be discharged despite new signs of dense breasts, lumps or breast growing in size. Eventually, 2 years later, after continuously raising concerns, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Due to the spread of the cancer, the client had to have mastectomy which was fortunately successful in treating the cancer but was very traumatic and distressing for the client. Our investigations concluded that this should have been diagnosed earlier and major surgery could have been avoided. The compensation awarded to our client now means that she is able to undergo the breast lift that she wanted to make her breasts more even after she was left unhappy about the appearance of her chest following her mastectomy.
Our Compensation Department has the experience in supporting those dealing with a delayed diagnosis of breast cancer. If you would like to talk to a member of our team about a possible clinical negligence claim, please contact us on 01482 323697.
