Hull’s Holy Trinity Church is set to become Minster

Hull’s minster-making ceremony on Saturday May 13 will be held outdoors so it’s fingers crossed for good weather.

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, will lead the 3pm service during which Holy Trinity Church will officially become Hull Minster with an outdoor ceremony in the new Trinity Square.

From 12pm, the square will filled with performances from Hull’s classical pop trio Tre Amici, of whom Williamsons Solicitors are a long time supporter of, a Shakespeare company, and a recently-formed band comprising musicians from churches across Hull. There will also be puppet shows and face-painting, while Hull’s ‘Gold Man’ will also be there.

In speaking to the Hull Daily Mail, Rev Woodcock said: “This isn’t going to be the Radio One Big Weekend but Trinity Square is going to be packed with people on May 13.

“We want to move away from the stuffy and joyless sense of what a church is about. Places of worship should be about celebration. We’re going to get out into the community and make a difference. So in that sense it’s great the service is going to be held outdoors. It sends out completely the right message. We’re all keeping our fingers crossed that the weather will be good!

“We want people to come along and see a bit of history being made. This is the most significant moment in the 700-year history of Holy Trinity, and we want to share it.”

At 3pm, The Archbishop of York will walk out of the minster carrying a lantern. The ceremony is expected to last 40 minutes, during which The Archbishop of York is expected to tell the audience that the occasion heralds a new dawn for both the church and Hull. Afterwards, a party will be held in the new Hull Minster.
