New Family Laws Delayed

When Parliament is closed for business, as has happened recently, almost all existing bills creating new law making their way through the House of Commons and House of Lords are dropped.

On this occasion these have included new law to protect victims of domestic violence and to bring about the major new reform to divorce law.

Paul Kirby, a senior solicitor in our family and childcare department commented:-

“This is an unfortunate consequence of the current political upheaval.  In effect the Government, or a new one if an election is called, will have to start all over again if it still wants what is proposed for the protection of victims and the new “no fault” divorce procedure to become law.  In the meantime, the position remains unchanged.”

With the additional prospect of a general election looming, it is very difficult to predict how long it will be before the proposed changes will now come into effect.
