Sailors Children’s Society Annual Sportsman’s Lunch

Williamsons Solicitors were the principal sponsors for the Sailors’ Children’s Society Annual Sportsman’s Lunch, which took place on Friday 10th October 2014 at the Grange Park Mercure Hotel in Willerby.  This was our 10th year running as main sponsors for one of the charity’s main corporate events. Guests enjoyed a 3 course meal, a raffle, an auction prize for a golf day with cricket star Kevin Pietersen and listened to BBC radio sports presenter, Garry Richardson.

The Sailors Children’s Society is a Hull-based national charity, set up to help families that have usually suffered a traumatic event such as bereavement, diagnosis of a terminal illness or the breakdown of a marital relationship. They provide ongoing support for the children until the family is again self-sufficient or until the children have left full time education.

The Society is funded via donations, legacies and local fundraising events. The Sailors’ Children’s Society organise regular events during the year to raise funds to support the ongoing commitment they make by supporting families. All money made at the Sportsman’s Lunch, including ticket sales, the auction and a raffle, will go towards the society’s winter clothing grant for the 451 disadvantaged children from families currently being supported.

The event has been a major attraction for the business community in the Hull area for 23 years and this year raised just under £30,000 with the help and generosity of supporting businesses.

Bill Waddington, Director at Williamsons Solicitors, who attended and gave the customary closing speech said: “The support from businesses for this very good cause is greatly appreciated. There are many children and families who are in urgent need of our help.

The popularity of this event has never wavered and, if anything, is getting stronger. There’s capacity for nearly 450 diners and we sold out before the end of January, which is some going by any standard. As a firm it has been an absolute privilege to have been involved over the last decade as the main sponsor of this event and there will hopefully be many years to come.”

Every 89p from every pound raised goes to the children supported by the charity, with about 80% of it staying in this region.
