Does your property have a septic tank? Septic Tank Regulations 2020

3 January 2020

Blog, Conveyancing

It is important to know whether your property has a septic tank with the new Septic Tank Regulations 2020.

As from 1st January 2020, the way in which septic tanks discharge waste water into a watercourse, i.e river or stream, not a soakaway or drainage field, is changing.

Conveyancing SolicitorJenny Holloway, a Licensed Conveyancer in our Conveyancing team says “The Septic Tank Regulations 2020, states that your septic tank must comply with the General Binding Rules of the Act. You will therefore need to either replace or upgrade your septic tank to a sewerage treatment plant or install a drainage field for the waste water to drain to. There will be a grace period for these works to be completed after 1st January 2020. However if you are selling your property before this date, the upgrade works will need completing prior to the sale of your property.”

The reason for the changes, is because waste water is no longer considered clean enough to drain into watercourses without causing pollution.

Further information on the General Binding Rules can be found on the Government website.
