Addenbrookes Hospital claims update on Kuldeep Stohr

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In February 2025, it was revealed that Kuldeep Stohr, an Orthopaedic Surgeon at Addenbrookes Hospital, had been suspended for causing serious harm to patients, both children and adults. This harm primarily occurred during hip surgeries and osteotomies – a procedure that reshapes the bones in the leg.

Ms Stohr has now had restrictions placed upon her by the General Medical Council (GMC). An interim order, which imposes the restrictions for a period of 18 months, states that she will be unable to conduct any pelvic osteotomy, femoral osteotomy or any surgery related to developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), unless directly supervised by a specifically appointed specialist. She is also only able to work in an NHS post or setting and must also not work as a locum or on a fixed-term contract.

The investigation by the Cambridgeshire University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust into 800 surgeries that Ms Stohr had performed, over a period of 13 years, led by Andrew Kennedy KC, is ongoing, as is the further investigation by the private company Verita, in order to review whether the Trust’s 2016 investigation into Ms Stohr was appropriate.

One of the patients contacted in relation to the care provided by Ms Stohr is Chloe Humphries. Chloe has hypermobility which involved issues with her left kneecap including multiple painful dislocations.  In 2015 and 2018, at the age of 15 and 18, she underwent knee surgery, namely left patella MPFL reconstruction and hamstring repair, under the care of Ms Stohr. Although this should have fixed her knee problems, she is still experiencing significant complications 10 years later, including loss of sensation, ongoing pain and limitation of movement.

When Chloe heard of the suspension of Ms Stohr, it felt “almost like a betrayal” by the hospital, particularly as she first heard of the suspension through news reports. Like many victims of medical negligence, Chloe states that she “lost all trust in the hospital. The longer it goes without transparency and clarity, that anxiety worsens.”
