NHS Hospital to pay out over £29 million in compensation over negligent post natal care to baby girl
Reading Time: 2 minutes
Stockport NHS Foundation Trust have admitted to negligence which led to a baby suffering catastrophic injuries which will affect her for the rest of her life. The payout is believed to be the second largest in any medical negligence claim against the NHS. The negligent care led to the baby, who’s case is under an anonymity order, developing cerebral palsy.
The family’s legal representatives have stated that the baby girl was born “seemingly healthy” but showed “signs of distress” after her birth. The Trust negligently missed issues in the baby’s care following birth which led to a delay in performing surgery. The negligent Hospital, Stepping Hill, apologised to the family and expressed that in the years since the event took place, it has improvements to ensure patients receive the highest level of care.
The compensation awarded will compensate for the pain and suffering the child has gone through, as well as cover the costs of future care and rehabilitation as she will have long lasting effects due to cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a group of neurological disorders which can affect movement, muscle tone and motor skills, often resulting from brain injury.
Compensation at this amount is often paid by a mixture of a lump sum and periodical payments, so that the money can be spent on rehabilitation throughout the child’s life. The compensation will assist the child for the rest of her life, helping to providing adequate care and accommodation.
At Williamsons, we are well experienced and dedicated to supporting families of those who have suffered medical negligence. Our solicitors have a wealth of experience in pursuing claims for both birth injury, negligent neonatal care and cerebral palsy cases. We know how difficult it is to suffer a traumatic birth, and to have your child suffer injury which should have been avoided. Cerebral palsy is a lifelong condition that often requires multidisciplinary care and rehabilitation and we have seen first-hand the massive difference it can make to secure funds to put in place privately funded multidisciplinary care and rehabilitation.
When families have suffered from negligence, we do not only seek compensation but build strong relationships and seek to assist the families through the process. The thought of a claim can be daunting but we aim to make the process of pursuing a claim as easy as it can be. We are always happy to pick up the phone, should you have any questions about a potential claim. We can have a free, no obligation discussion which is confidential but most importantly friendly on how to proceed.
If you would like to discuss how we can potentially help you and your family, please do not hesitate to get in touch on 01482 323697.
