World Blood Donor Day – 14 June 2026
Reading Time: 2 minutes
Every year on 14 June, world blood donor day is celebrated. This date is specifically chosen as it is the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, a biologist that identified the main blood groups that are still used in modern day medicine.

This is a day to acknowledge and appreciate those that donate blood, campaign for access to safe blood and raise awareness of blood diseases and conditions.
Who may need a blood donation?
Anyone may need a blood donation at any point in their lives; however, some examples are:
- Women that lose blood during childbirth
- People with traumatic injuries
- Blood disorders such as haemophilia
- People with sickle cell disease
- People with cancer
Blood donation and medical negligence
An example of why access to safe blood donation is important is the NHS Infected Blood Scandal. Between 1970 and the 1990s, thousands of people that had received blood donations were infected with Hepatitis B, C and HIV. In total, around 30,000 were estimated to be affected, most of these being people with haemophilia.

This resulted in a full inquiry that lasted six years and was finally published in 2024. Since then, an infected blood compensation authority has been established, to provide compensation for the victims.
How do I donate blood?
In the UK, there are requirements to give blood. You must be generally fit and healthy, at least 17 years old, weigh between 7 stone 12 lbs and 25 stone, and have suitable veins.
You must register to donate and book an appointment. via the NHS Blood and Transplant Website.
