Great Ormond Street Surgeon Yasser Jabbar investigation update

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In September 2024, it was revealed that Great Ormond Street Paediatric Orthopaedic surgeon Yaser Jabbar was under investigation by the Royal College of Surgeons, for causing serious harm to patients.

In the time that has passed since then, further shocking detail has come to light as to the severity and extent of the harm that he caused. The investigation remains ongoing but the findings revealed thus far demonstrate a pattern of serious harm being caused by inappropriate and negligent procedures, some without consent.

One of these was Bunty Stalham, a 6 year old girl who was born with a rare bone disease. She underwent 12 surgeries by Mr Jabbar, including limb lengthening surgery. Her Dad, Dean Stalham, stated that: ‘He was all smiles and success – coming in and saying I’ve lengthened her leg, it’s great, it’s longer than the other one, it was all a big major success and then out of the blue – actually no it hasn’t worked.’ The surgeries resulted in Bunty requiring a below the knee amputation, and suffering both physical and psychological harm.

Initially, 700 patients of Mr Jabbar’s were identified as potentially having suffered harm under his care. Recent developments have shown that around 588 patient reviews have been completed, and that the reviews of the remaining patients should be completed by the end of 2025. Great Ormond Street have also recently widened their investigation to patients that have been treated by both Mr Jabbar and other Resident Doctors.

Further investigations are also expected to proceed at multiple other hospitals that Mr Jabbar has been known to work at, including St John and St Elizabeth Hospital, Cromwell Hospital, Portland Hospital and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
